Prof. Joseph Harbison

Consultant Stroke Physician and Geriatrician

Joe Harbison is Associate Professor and Head of Discipline of Medical Gerontology in Trinity College Dublin as well as a practicing Geriatrician and Stroke Physician in St James’s Hospital in Dublin. Most of his research and clinical interests are around stroke and cerebrovascular disease. He was initially trained in Dublin but received my higher specialist training in the North East of England. He worked as a Consultant Physician in Gateshead and Yorkshire before coming to TCD in 2006. Between 2010 and 2017 he was the National Clinical Lead for Stroke in Ireland.

His main research interest are into the causes and associations of ischaemic disease and stroke in peoples cerebral white matter and particularly how abnormalities of cerebral perfusion may affect this. He has also developed an interest in causes of fatigue and psychological distress in people with stroke. He has researched in other areas such as sleep disorders and atrial fibrillation and have published in numerous journals including Lancet, Neurology and Stroke.

Apart from this he has a background in clinical pharmacology and medical safety and was a past Chair of the National Advisory committee on medication safety and long time Chair of the St James’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He teaches both undergraduate and post-graduate students and is course director of the Diploma in Cerebrovascular Diseases and Stroke of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He is a Primary Investigator in the Trinity College Institute for Neurosciences and is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Ireland and a Fellow of the European Stroke Organisation.
